The Australian Greens are calling on Tony Abbott to back off and allow the ACT to retain marriage equality legislation when it passes in October.
“Tony Abbott is seeking legal advice on overriding ACT’s marriage equality bill when he should just accept that equality is inevitable and let the ACT control its own jurisdiction,” Greens LGBTI spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“The Greens Abbott-proofed the ACT’s marriage equality legislation in the last term of government when their Self Government Bill was passed. Today we congratulate the ACT Greens for driving marriage equality legislation in the ACT which was introduced to applause and standing ovation from members and the gallery.
“The Greens will stand firm to protect the ACT’s marriage equality legislation and are calling on the Labor party to do the same, by ensuring its members will vote to block Mr Abbott’s fight against equality in federal parliament.”
