The Greens’ LGBTI spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, has today urged all Labor members to follow the Prime Minister’s example when it comes to marriage equality.
Senator Hanson-Young made the call at the launch of Australian Marriage Equality’s new website, www.vote4love.com.au, which details the way that candidates for every seat in Australia plan to vote on marriage equality.
“The Greens are calling on all members of the Labor Party to back their leader and support his position on marriage equality,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
“Kevin Rudd can’t deliver this essential reform by himself. The Greens are ready and willing to help anyone who is genuine about achieving marriage equality, but the Labor Party will need to support the change as well.
“A genuine tri-partisan approach will be essential for us to end this discrimination.
“Tony Abbott must allow Coalition members a conscience vote on the issue and Labor members must rally behind their leader and vote in line with their party’s actual policy position.
“Every voter across the country can make their voice heard at this election too. By visiting www.vote4love.com.au people can see how their Senate and local candidates will vote when it comes to ending discrimination.
“I can guarantee that every Greens candidate is 100 per cent committed to achieving marriage equality. All we need now is for the old parties to catch up.”
